Rehab saved my life. Yoga saved my life. POUND is keeping me alive. I get to teach POUND to a group of recovering addicts at the same treatment center that stood beside me as I began to heal my life. Being a POUND Pro has brought my life full circle in a way I never thought life could, one beat at a time.
I have been to this treatment center twice and both times they embraced me with arms wide opened. Through trying to heal my addiction and getting treatment I became a certified yoga teacher and then a POUND Pro soon after all within the same year. I was in detox twice. The second experience much more pleasant then the first but it was all worth it. The second detox I was so happy to be in because the last relapse didn’t kill me- I jumped for joy and did yoga every goddamn day. I made everyone else do it as well, through the headaches, shakes and yes puke spells. I didn’t care. The rawness of being alive with other people who cared and other people that were going through the same thing inspired me to keep moving in any way possible.
When I completed the second rehab stay, I returned home to be a wife, a mother and to complete my yoga teacher training. I completed it 4 months after I got out of rehab and got certified as a POUND Pro a month later. At the time I was so unsure of myself I didn’t have enough confidence to even be proud of myself . I can say now that it is god damn impressive and took some bold fearless courage to do that. I am proud. How did I do it? Inhaled and exhaled with every step and never ever looked back while I cried in Savasana and screamed as I pounded.
What is POUND?
“Instead of listening to music, you become the music in this exhilarating
full-body workout that combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training
with yoga and pilates-inspired movements. Using Ripstix®, lightly weighted
drumsticks engineered specifically for exercising, POUND transforms
drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out. As a community, we believe that we have the ability to inspire a nation, to turn the fitness world on its head, and to truly find alternative ways to ROCK. We aspire to change minds before bodies and use beat and alternative movement to launch people to new heights of self worth,
happiness and human connection. AKA, release their INNER ROCKSTARS” -POUND
As you can tell from that description, what better treatment is there for POUNDing out addiction and chasing your recovery then that? I walked back into that treatment center to teach others as a badass woman warrior, not the meek little girl I was just a year before but more humble than ever. What a gift I get to give. I will never forget the first smile I saw on their faces while teaching POUND and I just wanted to bottle it up for them knowing that it can be so fleeting during treatment. I will never forget the first time I heard them take a deep breath as a group together as I looked at the walls I stared at for 60 days of my life not knowing how I was going to make it in that big bad scary world. Now I know, this is how and it’s not so scary at all, it is vulnerable, messy and beautiful.
POUND, like yoga is my church. I get to beat shit, scream, sweat, become really loud music, let stuff go like never before and really enjoy doing it! POUND speaks to those who many time have been unspoken for and can’t speak for themselves. It’s the true meaning of being able to step into your power and keep the beat literally in your heart forever. There is no better way I can think of to really live my life out loud and inspire others do the same than through pounding my heart out and becoming myself with others. I get to teach others to ignite their inner rock stars everyday. Bam! Lying in that hospital, depleted, waiting for my first placement for a bed in detox, becoming a rockstar was the furthest thing from my mind but I’m here.
Things can change. Life can change but I will tell you this: YOU can change. Find what you need to be yourself and live your truth and nothing but your truth fiercely, out loud, one beat at a time.
